How the Ballet Centre Helps Young Jamaicans Gain Access to Specialized Training and Development Opportunities

Ballet training is not available to children of all economic backgrounds. For a number of years, The Ballet Centre has been trying to address this situation by offering scholarships to children who would normally not be able to pay for their classes. The scholarships are provided through audition.

Scholarship winners receive the following benefits:

• Free tuition for 6 or 7 years
• Provision of accessories and apparel for scholarship winners
• Ballet shoes - especially Pointe shoes, which are quite expensive. The shoes must be imported into Jamaica.
• A transportation subsidy when necessary.

Some recent scholarship winners:

Beromie Adams (age 15)

Beromie Adams spent three years attending open classes twice per week. His scholarship was upgraded and he was invited to join the intensive program. He is a third year student.

Floyd Vincent (age 14)

Floyd has been working in the intensive program for three years. He is a third-year student.

Lamont Pigford (age 13)

Lamont is a first year student. He worked for a year in the Level II open class and was later invited to join the intensive programme

LaShana Cushnie (age 9)

La Shana is a first year student who worked in the open classes twice per week for two years before entering the intensive programme.
